About LESKOVAC:
Leskovac is one of the largest minicipalities situated in the south of
Serbia. It has around 160 000 inhabitants and 144 settlements. By 1945,
Leskovac was the second most developed town in Serbia after Belgrade and
was known as Little Manchester because of very strong textile industry.
As years went by, industry was declining until it became a ruin. Leskovac
also has strong pharmacy and cosmetics industry. It is very well, even
internationally, known as a town of hot chilli paprikas and Meat festival
which is traditionally held every year in September. Fifty non-guovernamental
organizations work in Leskovac. It has couple of very successful sport
clubs, theatres, cinemas and a cultural centre, three TV stations, around
ten radio stations and a local newspaper. Although it has many potentials,
Leskovac has very high percentage of unemployed and is concidered undeveloped.
New, Corridor 10 highway will not go near Leskovac although the old one
was very close to the town.
