WORKSHOP 301
BRANKO PAVIĆ, DRAGAN JELENKOVIĆ
Workshop 301 is an experiment that resulted from the needs of the students of the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade who take the Fine Arts course which includes additional research in the field of visual communications. The aim of the workshop 301 is to explore the methods of work and the instruments for co-ordination of the creative process in the bordering area between fine arts and architecture. The programme of the workshop begins with the initiation through the assigned pattern which is gradually transformed into a space model by means of an abstract image, thus reflecting the initial impulse and turning it into architectonics. This shows that it is possible to materialize the atmosphere. The first workshop began on April 27th 1995 with the Radio B92 broadcast of four specially selected tracks. The participants answered to the incentive by painting. The painting that was created served as a starting point for the next three phases in which that artistic expression was progressively transformed into a space model. This is how a public statement was formed starting from an individual feeling. The workshop ended with an exhibition in Cinema Rex. The second workshop whose programme was expanded (the introduction of space along with music) was held in Zamorsc, Poland during the European Congress of Architecture Students in August 1995. A short video was made in the course of the fifteen day workshop. The third workshop was held in May 1996. This time the musical incentive, created especially for use in this workshop, was provided by the band Darkwood Dub. Tracks 301 and 302 were presented to the participants in specially arranged surroundings in study room number 301 at the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade. The workshop was expanded through the programme submitted by the colleague Dejan Vasovic. In the final phase of the programme the capacities of concrete for creating artistic space structures are examined. The programme developed in the direction of making architectural models. The works created in the course of the workshop were shown in June 1996 in Cinema Rex with the help and support of Radio B92. Workshop 301 was invited to participate in Alter Image - the accompanying programme of 36th Belgrade International Theatre Festival, which presented one possible choice of alternative events on the Yugoslav scene in the nineties. The workshop maintained the same programme, but it was adapted to scenic character of the festival. The initial sound (vroom) was presented in the Centre for Cultural Decontamination (Pavilion Veljkovic). In the next phase, abstract images inspired by the musical incentive were transformed into a statement in language form which was derived from the image (matrix). By using computer technology the statement was then given its final shape of individual sound recording. The work was shown on the stage on October 3rd 1996. While the slides (images) were shown, each participant backed his own individual recording by some sort of motion. The sound composed of all individual sound recordings marked the end of the presentation. The aim of the work is to transform a complex, universal protosound into individual languages, which again merge into one universal common sound.
Next workshop was part of the Lust for Life festival dedicated to 100th anniversary of Wilhelm Reich' birth… "Sixth multimedia project of Workshop 301 was planned to be one form of reflection of Student protest 1996-1997 (date of event: 16th November 1997 - 1st anniversary of student demonstrations) with emphasis on walk - form of performance or process of moving around the map to explore space of the city. With this idea the space of Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade was transformed into an ambiental whole. In the dim entrance, staircases, corridors and rooms individual installations were placed. The walk around the labyrinth of the dark old building had its physical and metaphysical connotations. The very theme Lust for Life gave essential tone and firmed the structure of this audio-visual experiment. The ambient full of surprises and spontaneous game of discovering and finding with elements of spectacle was solved with the universal method examined in stage arts. Music, sound effects, different sources of light: headlight, candles, slides, videobeam…with participation of public (walkers) increased excitement effect and mysticism of the installations and interventions in space. Initiation, process and conclusion are three unifying segments of the task Workshop 301 set, which this time was: how to transform space…"

Inicijacija, razrada i zaključak predstavljaju tri objedinjujuća segmenta u postavljenom problemu Radionice 301 a on je ovoga puta glaslo: Kako transformisati prostor?..."
